The Little Lunch Box That Changed Everything

5 - 10 mins · Easy

A Picky Chefs Foodventure Story

A long time ago, kids didn’t have ready made lunch kits like today.

Back in the early 1900s, most children brought simple lunches to school in small tins or cloth bags. Inside, you’d often find bread, cheese, and maybe some fruit very similar to what we still eat today!

Fast forward to the 1980s, when a company called Oscar Mayer introduced the first “Lunchables.” The idea was simple:
Let kids build their own mini meals.

Kids loved it because it felt like a game.
Parents liked it because it was quick.

But there was one problem…
Many store bought versions had extra salt, preservatives, and not-so-healthy ingredients.

So now… YOU become the chef
And you make your own fresh, healthy version, just like kids did long ago, but even better!

Difficulty

Very Easy

Ingredients

  • 6–8 whole grain crackers
  • 2 slices cheese (cut into small squares or triangles)
  • 2–3 slices turkey (folded or cut)
  • 1 apple (sliced into wedges)
  • Optional Add-Ons (Lunch Box Ideas):
  • Grapes or berries (if your child likes fruit)
  • Baby carrots or cucumber slices (optional)
  • Small dip container (hummus or yogurt dip)

Steps

1. Prepare the Apple

Wash the apple and slice it into wedges.
Tip: Ask an adult to help with cutting!

2. Cut the Cheese

Cut your cheese slices into small squares or triangles.
Make them about the same size as the crackers.

3. Fold the Turkey

Fold each turkey slice into smaller pieces so they fit nicely on crackers.

4. Build Your Lunch Box

Place everything into your lunch container:

  • Crackers on one side
  • Cheese and turkey in the middle
  • Apple wedges on the other side

5. Time to Create!

At lunch, stack your own mini sandwiches:
cracker + cheese + turkey = delicious!

Fun Fact

Did you know? The idea of building your own food has been around for hundreds of years. In many countries, people ate meals made of small pieces like bread, cheese, and meat that they combined however they liked. Your homemade Lunchable is just a modern version of that same idea.
