Pavlova
(New Zealand & Australia, 1920s)

This light, meringue-based dessert was accidentally created when chefs tried to make a cake for Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. Its crispy outside and soft inside became a beloved dessert, with both New Zealand and Australia claiming its invention.

Vegemite
(Australia, 1922)

After World War I caused shortages of British Marmite, Australian food scientists experimented with brewer’s yeast and accidentally created Vegemite. Though its strong flavor is an acquired taste, it became a staple in Australian breakfasts, often spread on toast.

Damper Bread
(Australia, 19th Century)

Early Australian settlers needed a simple bread that could be cooked on an open fire. By mixing flour, water, and salt, they accidentally created damper, a soft, hearty bread baked directly in campfire ashes.
